Checklist

Espresso Setup Checklist

Use this before buying a machine. The goal is not the fanciest setup. The goal is a setup that makes good coffee on a normal morning without creating regret.

Budget the setup, not just the machine

  • Reserve real money for the grinder. Under $1,000, the grinder usually changes shot quality more than the machine.
  • For a Bambino-class machine, plan for a Baratza Encore ESP or DF54-level grinder instead of pre-ground coffee.
  • Leave room for a scale, knock box, milk pitcher, cleaning tablets, and better beans.

Choose the machine by routine

  • Mostly espresso or americanos: prioritize machine value and grinder quality.
  • Daily lattes or cappuccinos: pay for better milk workflow, especially automatic milk if you are new.
  • Small kitchen: measure counter width, water-tank access, and grinder placement before buying.

Avoid the common regrets

  • Do not spend the whole budget on a machine and leave nothing for a grinder.
  • Do not buy a manual hobbyist machine if you want appliance-level convenience.
  • Do not assume a built-in grinder is always cheaper long term if you already want to upgrade.

Fast recommendation path

  • Best starter value: Breville Bambino plus a Baratza Encore ESP.
  • Best compact milk setup: Breville Bambino Plus plus a good grinder.
  • Best all-in-one convenience: Breville Barista Express or Barista Pro.

    Breville Bambino Plus

A tiny machine with a fast thermojet heater and automatic milk texturing. If counter space is the constraint and you want good milk drinks with little practice, this is the pick.

    Breville Bambino

The best pure espresso value under $500. It heats fast, takes almost no counter space, and leaves enough budget for the grinder that actually decides your shot quality.

  3. Gaggia Classic Evo Pro product image
    Gaggia · $499

    Gaggia Classic Evo Pro

A commercial style portafilter, a metal body, and a design that has barely changed because it works. It rewards skill and is endlessly modifiable, so it ages with you instead of against you.
