Checklist
Smart Home Compatibility Checklist
Smart home purchases go wrong when each device works alone but the whole house does not work together.
Pick the ecosystem first
- Apple households should prioritize HomeKit or Matter support.
- Alexa-only homes can buy cheaper Alexa-native devices if they do not plan to mix ecosystems.
- Mixed homes should choose Matter where possible, but expect setup friction while the standard matures.
Check the network
- Most plugs and sensors still need 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi.
- Older routers can struggle once a house has dozens of connected devices.
- Reliability after power loss is more important than flashy app features.
Buy fewer, better devices
- Start with one room and repeat what works instead of buying a mixed pile of devices.
- Avoid no-name devices whose cloud servers may disappear.
- Use outdoor-rated plugs outside. Indoor smart plugs do not belong on patios or holiday lights.
